This article discusses 28mm scale Farm Animal plastic miniatures from Warlord Games. The Warlord Games box of Farmyard Animals allow you to make 30 miniature models including dairy cows, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs and cats, geese, ducks, and chickens. These models are useful for virtually any diorama or conflict game from ancient to current times.
The set was painted mostly with a base layer of Vallejo XPress paints, followed by highlights of Vallejo Model Colors. A few ArmyPainter Speedpaints and ArmyPainter Warpaints are used as well.
Despite the simplicity of painting animals with no clothing or accessories, I spent quite a bit of time getting the color schemes of the fur and feathers to my liking. The bases too required about the same amount of time as 28mm human figures.
Here the Warlord Games farm animals in the center are joined by some cheaper plastic children's toys on the flanks. The Warlord Games animals are slightly smaller, more expensive, and nicer. I say they mix perfectly well on a gaming table. However for a photo session, you probably do not want to mix them.
Similarly, the Warlord Games farm animals are smaller than most other manufacturer's animals. I've seen farm animals from WhizKids, Reaper, and others.
They come in two poses. They also have no puddle bases, so I glued the plastic polystyrene hooves to plastic bases.
I did not spend much time preping the models before assembly. Hence these minis have quite pronounced seams. A little more sanding and some filler putty would make the models more realistic.
The donkeys and pigs in particular have quite smooth bodies. XPress and Speedpaints can tend to pool or puddle on smooth surfaces. I had to push the drying paint around to get the proper amount of shading. There is still a bit of blotching, but overall I like the variation in colors.
These models have much more detailed fur than the donkeys and pigs. Hence the XPress paints pools much more nicely here than on the smoother models.
These models are much smaller than the previous animals, hence four to a base. All these models look fantastic for their tiny size.
For games like Victrix's Pillage, where one objective is to steal items, these farm animals help you with victory conditions. Four geese are probably as worthwhile as two cheap.
I hope you enjoyed seeing the photographs and descriptions of my Farmyard Animals. Thanks for visiting my site and browsing this article.
